Perhaps one of the most important periods for sustained performance is during recovery from exertion. Much of the effort and thought that goes into training and preparing for performance can be undone if this period isn’t managed appropriately.

Exertion – whether for speed or stamina, training or competition – causes greater than normal demands on body processes and structures. This is when body reserves are called upon, tissues are pushed to their limits and short-term compensatory mechanisms come into play – all of which temporarily adjusts the body’s overall state and balance. This is perfectly natural and doesn’t present a problem, provided the athlete has the time and appropriate components to return the body status to normal, and so recover properly.

Achieving optimal recovery comes down understanding what aspects of normal metabolism have been most affected by exertion and perhaps more importantly, how to assist them returning to pre-exertion levels quickly.

Electrolytes

Sweating is not only a major source of fluid loss, but also a direct source of loss of electrolytes such as sodium, potassium, chloride and magnesium. These compounds, particularly sodium, have vital roles in regulating thirst, as well as fluid metabolism within the body, so replacing losses (and ensuring free access to water) is important to quickly return an equine athlete to a normal hydration state, post-exertion. Electrolytes are also essential for normal nerve and muscle function, so depleted reserves need replenishing quickly, to ensure ongoing performance. Many electrolytes are involved in regulating glucose metabolism and so are important in making sure energy is not only appropriately directed for recovery but also that energy levels are where they need to be for the next performance demand.

B-vitamins

Another vital component for energy metabolism, B-vitamins are also instrumental in how protein is utilised in the body. Protein is the most important macronutrient for muscle growth, maintenance, and repair, so ensuring optimal utilisation is key for the equine athlete.

Antioxidants

All body processes produce particles called free radicals. Clearing the body of these particles is a natural part of the early exertion recovery period and this role is performed by antioxidants. Many compounds have antioxidant properties, including vitamins C and E, which work synergistically when combined. In addition, there is mounting research that supplementing the equine athlete with the powerful antioxidant ubiquinol (CoQ10) aids muscle recovery after strenuous exercise.
