“I started feeding the new NUTRI-GARD to my Working Hunter Connemara and what a difference it has made. We were struggling to get her middle to drop down; ad lib haylage wasn’t working and increasing the feed just made her neck solid so we kept her on the RED MILLS PerformaCare Balancer. After 10 days on the NUTRI-GARD powder… Wow! She’s a much more content pony to handle, even her stride length has increased!”

Prepare for Winter with Nutri-Gard, for Complete Gut Care

The temperatures are dropping and the fields are getting wet, resulting in slowed grass growth and perhaps a limited time period that your horse can turn out to his paddock. While some horses take this shift in diet and management practice all in their stride, others find it more challenging, resulting in undesirable behaviours and digestive disturbances.

What happens to the inner workings of our horses when we transition them from grazing to stabling, and how can Nutri-Gard help?

Disruption to gut microbiome: fresh grazing tends to be higher in calories than preserved forages such as hay or haylage. Therefore, horses in medium to high levels of exercise that are transitioning from full time turn out to being stabled are likely to need supplementary concentrate feed in order to meet their calorie requirements. This dietary change can cause a disruption to the gut microbiome, particularly when the change is made abruptly. Nutri-Gard contains prebiotics which feed good gut bacteria, encouraging them to thrive and reducing the risk of ‘bad’ bacteria from populating.

Increased risk of gastric ulceration: stress and intermittent feeding are just two of many risk factors associated with gastric ulcers. Nutri-Gard contains amino acids which support mucin production to line and protect the digestive tract. Pectin is also included to buffer excess stomach acid, often associated with large concentrate meals or reduced access to forage.

Increased susceptibility to disease: the stress associated with a change in routine causes increased cortisol levels and disruption to the delicate gut microbiome. This can result in a reduced ability to fight disease and infection. The postbiotics included in Nutri-Gard have been showed to help stress-challenged horses by reducing cortisol levels, stabilising microbial populations, and improving immune responses.

Increased risk of colic: research has shown that horses have a greater risk of colic 7-14 days after dietary changes. Compaction colics may occur in stabled horses due to increased dry matter consumption and reduced water intake. Ensure clean, fresh, tepid water is available at all times and consider supplementing an omega-3 rich oil to help lubricate the digestive tract. Regular exercise will also assist the movement of digesta through the tract. Gas colics, on the other hand, may result from sudden dietary changes causing disruption to microbial populations. Reduce this risk by introducing dietary changes slowly, keeping meal sizes small and supplementing with Nutri-Gard prior to and during these changes to help good bacteria thrive and populate.
