Friska Foal: A vitamin supplement for young horses

Newborn horses, entirely dependent on the mare’s milk for their nutritional needs, may face challenges when the milk supply falls short. Certain mares, including those who have been ill, older mares, or maiden mares, might produce milk of reduced quality and quantity. While adjustments to the mare’s diet can improve milk quality, it may take time. During this transition, it’s crucial to consider the newborn horse’s nutritional requirements carefully.

Sick foals often nurse less frequently, reducing their intake of vital energy and vitamins, which can exacerbate their disease and they will need extra support.

Friska Foal, our foal supplement with its multi-vitamin and prebiotic formulation, is tailored to complement the mare’s milk and support the needs of young foals. It provides a nutritional boost for foals at risk of a nutritional gap, those not thriving, or those with health issues. This liquid supplement for foals is highly palatable for very young horses, even when they are off their food.

Friska Foal is administered once or twice daily and can be used from 24 hours of age. Many studs incorporate Friska Foal into the standard management of all foals for the first weeks of life , making it ideal for use during periods of stress, such as when traveling with the mare.

Understanding the Nutritional Needs of Foals

The nutritional requirements of foals are not simply scaled-down versions of those of adult horses. Foals experience rapid growth, with an average weight gain of approximately 1 kg per day. To sustain this growth rate without compromising their health, they require elevated levels of vitamins, as well as essential nutrients such as calcium, phosphorus, protein, energy, and vitamin D. Musculoskeletal growth is particularly rapid and visible, but various other systems are also developing and rely on key vitamins.

This phase sets the foundation for the foal’s potential future show-ring or racing career. Therefore, providing essential vitamins to support healthy growth and a robust immune system will yield long-term benefits.

Recognizing Insufficient Milk Intake

Healthy foals typically nurse from their mothers multiple times an hour. A healthy foal not receiving enough milk will be more active, constantly attempting to nurse. They may push persistently and aggressively at the mare’s udder in contrast to foals that receive an ample milk supply, who nurse in a more relaxed manner.

In situations where a foal is not receiving enough milk, efforts should be made to increase the mare’s milk production by adjusting her diet. Alternatively, your vet may suggest certain medications. In extreme cases, a milk replacer can be provided in addition to nursing from the mare or a foster mare might be necessary.

If you suspect that your foal is not receiving enough milk, immediate veterinary assistance is essential, as even a healthy foal not receiving enough milk can deteriorate rapidly.

Supporting Sick Foals

Sick foals should be under the supervision of a veterinarian. Depending on the severity of their condition, they may require hospitalization, separation from the mare, and intravenous nutrition or total parenteral nutrition.

For less severe cases where foals are still nursing or receiving a milk replacer, Friska Foal’s multivitamin and prebiotic formulation can be particularly beneficial. It focuses on increasing the intake of essential vitamins, promoting gut microflora development through prebiotics, and supporting various developmental and immune functions. B vitamins optimize appetite, supporting nursing or milk replacer consumption, as well as red blood cell health.

Diarrhoea is a relatively common and potentially devastating condition in foals. Friska Foal’s prebiotic may aid in promoting the growth of beneficial gut microbes, alongside necessary veterinary treatment. The antioxidants in Friska Foal support the immune system during recovery from infection, and B vitamins promote appetite and efficient energy and protein utilization for growth.

Friska Foal is designed as a nutritional foal supplement to support normal foal development and immune health, not as a replacement diet. If you have a sick foal under veterinary care, obtain approval before adding Friska Foal to the diet.

Note: Veterinary attention is immediately required for foals that have stopped nursing, as prompt intervention is essential. Diarrhoea in foals may be fatal.
